Networking, personally coming into contact with people in your field, is the way to find new work. As a business online network, LinkedIn is an extremely suitable tool for profiling yourself, building and maintaining your network.



Many facets make LinkedIn particularly valuable to job seekers. Yet research shows that many LinkedIn users do not know exactly what they can do with it.


Are you not yet using LinkedIn because you are afraid of making mistakes on Social Media? Or do you not know exactly what you can and cannot publish on LinkedIn. Then read the following article.


DO: Invite right away!


If you've met someone and you immediately invite them to Facebook, it can seem a bit desperate or creepy. But LinkedIn has completely different rules! If you've been talking to someone for 10 minutes at a conference, meeting, or another meeting, invite someone to LinkedIn right after that. Preferably the same day. The longer you wait, the less likely they are to remember you.


DON'T: Invite people without a personal message


On LinkedIn, you can invite people in different ways. One of those ways is to scroll through your list of People you may know. You can see hundreds of suggestions from LinkedIn at a glance. Very tempting to immediately click on the blue button: Connect. Please note that your invitation will be sent immediately. You do not get the chance/opportunity to add a personal message to it. Your invitation is then standard and not unique and that is exactly what you DO NOT want. The only way to invite someone with a personal message is to go to someone's profile and click on the connect button.


DO: Personalize your invitation



If there's one important thing, it's to personalize invitations. Suppose you receive a request from a colleague with the following text:


“I'd like to connect with you on LinkedIn,”  Or


In both cases, the person will accept you, but in the second example, someone is being addressed personally. Do you notice and feel the difference? It's worth the extra effort!


DON'T: Don't send your request more than once

Have patience! Inviting a connection again will lower your chance of success.
If you are pushy, people are more likely to refuse your request. You don't have to remind someone, LinkedIn does this automatically.


DO: Connect met recruiters!



When looking for a job, one of the first things you should do is connect with recruiters in your field.


In your request, explain that you are looking for a new job and that you are curious about possible opportunities. Recruiters are often the first to know where there are new jobs and are good discussion partners who are happy to give you (free) tips about your resume and profile.


DON'T: Leave activity notification on while editing your profile



When you're editing your profile, you don't want your connections to get an overkill of updates about you. Go to your Privacy and settings on LinkedIn and turn this option off. Also on your profile page, there is a button on the right side where you are asked if you want to inform your network of your changes. When you're done making changes, turn the button back on so people can see when you've got a new job or are celebrating your anniversary.

Several studies show that the best way to enter a company is through the door.
So try to get in touch with people who work at companies that you find interesting, you have to be visible and findable!


So suppose you would like to work at Philips. Then type in Philips on LinkedIn and refine your search so that you only see people who currently work at Philips. Is there someone in your first-degree connection, ask for a referral!


Maybe you only have people in a second-degree connection? Then go back to your first-degree connection and ask them for an introduction. You don't have any part connection. No problem, read more about LinkedIn groups in one of my next articles.


DON'T: Don't post too much!



Posting two or three articles every day, promoting your website, and making offers are too much of a good thing. Your connections don't want to start their day with just updates about you and what you're up to. If people get irritated they can block you and that is, of course, the last thing you want. However, practice shows that people are more likely to post too little than too much. An unwritten rule is:


Post a few times a week and no more than twice a day. This way you remain visible without people developing an allergy to you.


DO: Congratulate people when they update their profile



On the far right side of your homepage, there's a block where LinkedIn shows who has recently taken on new jobs, is celebrating an anniversary or has changed their photo.


It's tempting to just click the "interesting" button or put a short "Congratulations" button. To network meaningfully, it is important to put in some extra energy by leaving a personal message. 

It will increase the connection between you and that person and you will also make a good impression on others, who also read your comments.

DON'T: Only congratulate people you know for sure have a new job


If someone gives their old employer an update or if someone has not properly closed their old employer, it could be that that person is coming up for an anniversary celebration or that they seem to have a new job after working for that company for years. It doesn't seem smart to comment on such an update or congratulate someone. So be careful!


Conclusion:



The biggest misconception on social media is that people think it matters what you have to say. Interesting content is of course valuable, but what people are looking for is: looking for a solution to their problem!
